Healthcare is an extremely broad field with countless aspects to it. Healthcare includes physical illness, mental health and injuries to joints muscles and bones. With so many facets to health, choosing the correct healthcare/ medical practitioner can be confusing. Typically, most people start with their Family Doctor.
Typically, this is a good start, a general practitioner is the gateway to the healthcare system. They have broad training across almost all areas. If it is a simple issue it can be managed by them. However, the true power of a general practitioner is their ability to refer you to the most suitable person to get you better. So, when in doubt, please see your general practitioner.
Where does Physiotherapy come in?
Like medicine, physiotherapy has several avenues which we specialise in. Physiotherapists work in aged care, hospitals, work safety and private practice.
Private practice Physiotherapists are the General Practitioners of the Physiotherapy world. We specialise in understanding a broad range of injuries conditions and diseases which affect the bones joints and muscles in the body. Our role is to get your body pain free and moving well.
A private practice physiotherapist will perform a thorough assessment and then create a tailored rehabilitation program specific to your needs. This includes education, exercise, taping and manual therapies such as massage.
Do I need a referral?
No, you don’t. You only need to call and make a booking.
To summarize, this is what I say to my patients. “If you’re sick or unsure, see your family doctor, If you’re sore or stiff, see your Physiotherapist”
