Mental Health in Western Sydney

Western Sydney is home to a diverse population facing unique mental health challenges:

  • Mental health conditions are among the most common long-term health conditions in Western Sydney, with rates higher than the Greater Sydney average
  • Young people are particularly affected, with increasing demand for youth mental health services in the region
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased mental health challenges across all age groups
  • Western Sydney has historically had fewer mental health services per capita than other parts of Sydney, despite similar or higher rates of mental health conditions

These statistics highlight the critical importance of accessible, high-quality psychological services in our community.

Community Context in Western Sydney

Western Sydney’s unique social and environmental factors influence mental health needs:

  • Many residents face long commutes to work, which research links to increased stress and reduced family time
  • The region has experienced significant development and population growth, bringing social changes that can impact community connectedness
  • Western Sydney has diverse demographic needs across its multicultural communities
  • Access to specialist and psychiatric services is identified as a key health priority

At OnePointHealth, our psychologists understand these local factors and develop treatment approaches that consider the unique context of life in Western Sydney.

Yes, our psychologists are experienced in working with people across the lifespan, including children and adolescents. We use age-appropriate, evidence-based strategies to help young people with presentations such as anxiety, behavioural concerns, ADHD, autism, and developmental issues. We take a family-focused approach and work closely with parents to provide effective strategies and techniques.

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of psychological service. Information shared in sessions remains confidential with few exceptions: if there’s risk of harm to yourself or others, if information is subpoenaed by court, or if you provide consent to share information with other healthcare providers. For children and adolescents, appropriate information may be shared with parents/guardians while respecting the young person’s privacy. Your psychologist will discuss these limits to confidentiality during your first session.

You can access our psychology services through several pathways. Many patients come with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from their GP, which provides Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. You can also access our services through NDIS funding if you’re self or plan-managed, or as a private fee-paying patient without a referral. If you’re unsure which option is best for you, please contact our friendly team who can provide guidance.

Standard psychology sessions at OnePointHealth Penrith are 50 minutes in duration. Initial assessment sessions may run slightly longer (up to 60 minutes) as we gather comprehensive information about your needs. Diagnostic assessment sessions may be scheduled for longer durations depending on the assessment type.

Our session fees vary depending on the type of service and funding arrangement. We offer Medicare rebates with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan, NDIS support for eligible participants, and private health insurance rebates depending on your level of cover. Please contact our reception team for current fee information.

our first session with a OnePointHealth psychologist will focus on understanding your current challenges, relevant history, and goals for therapy. Your psychologist will explain how sessions work, discuss confidentiality, and begin developing a personalised treatment plan. You’re welcome to ask questions and discuss any concerns you might have. Many patients find it helpful to bring notes about what they’d like to discuss.
